The New image program is a
holistic, culturally specific rites of
passage program for youths 9 to 19 years old. It uses experimental methods which
enable youths to develop a healthy functional attitude through a process of
introspective intervention. It facilitates personal growth and development, and
the transitional period from adolescent to adulthood. The process enables
participants to examine their personal life situations, identify strengths and
weaknesses, and make future plans and personally follow-up with the execution
of the plans.
The program promotes the acquisition of skills needed for the development of
positive personality, social relationships, social interactions, and the
ability to make decisions and solve problems in conflict situations without
turning to drugs and violence.
The new image passage of rites program is based on the values system, the Nguzo
Saba, developed by Maulana Ron Karenga. Karenga extracted the seven principles
of blackness from the traditions of the African people who lived along the Nile
Valley during ancient times, however practicality of the principles transcend,
color, creed, religion, ethnicity or national origin.
